Top Ten YA Dystopian Series
These are my top picks (at present) of Young Adult Dystopian Series, the ones that really stood out to me or that I couldn’t put down. These are the main books in the series though most of them have in between novels.

Birthmarked
This is one of those series no one else read. The focus on Gaia being a midwife was new and different in the genre (at least when I was reading it) and I appreciated the insight to the culture. I really liked Gaia’s spirit and how she processed the world she had to live in especially being on the outskirts of society.

I was super into the way this series was written. Juliette’s emotions really leaked off the pages and the flow of the story kept me engaged. I liked the X-Men vibe. Plus, y’know, Warner.

The Darkest Minds
This was one I thought I was going to write off. I thought it was going to be hokey or painful to read but I read the whole series in a crazy whirlwind. The writing was good, the characters were well fleshed out, and the powers were really fun. Plus, those titles working as a full sentence make my brain happy.
In Between Novels: In Time 1.5 Sparks Rise 2.5 Beyond the Night 3.5 Liam’s story 1.6 I’m cheating and putting The Darkest Legacy here too. It’s technically book four but there’s a protagonist shift and this made me feel better.

This was one a friend recommended and it was all a blur after that. The characters were so freaking good. One of the best enemies to lovers for me. They were on opposing sides but you could still empathize with both of them. The drama was real.

The Hunger Games
The one that started the whole craze and it was way worth the hype. It’s simplistic writing style and heavy content catapulted the series to the top. There are layers and layers to the characters and to the world that make the series worth the reread.

Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can’t wait. In just a few weeks she’ll have the operation that will turn her from a repellent ugly into a stunning pretty. And as a pretty, she’ll be catapulted into a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun.

This was one that was before the hype and is now starting to get some traction. It was so real and harsh I was captivated from start to finish. The society and system were twisted and felt way too close to home. The Imposters series is a sequel series that I have not read yet but I’ve got my eye on it. There is also a Netflix movie pending.
The Giver
At the age of twelve, Jonas, a young boy from a seemingly utopian, futuristic world, is singled out to receive special training from The Giver, who alone holds the memories of the true joys and pain of life.
Gathering Blue
A society ruled by savagery and deceit that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever.
As she did in The Giver, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, and what will be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kira’s plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future.
Messenger
Matty has lived in Village and flourished under the guidance of Seer, a blind man known for his special sight. Village once welcomed newcomers, but something sinister has seeped into Village and the people have voted to close it to outsiders. Matty has been invaluable as a messenger. Now he must risk everything to make one last journey through the treacherous forest with his only weapon, a power he unexpectedly discovers within himself.

The Giver
I remember reading this in the seventh grade. It changed the way books felt for me, what they could do. The impact of color and truth it was all so well done. It deserves its fame and the sequels fill out the world so well. This is one of those I think everyone should read.
Unwind
Connor, Risa, and Lev are running for their lives.
The Second Civil War was fought over reproductive rights. The chilling resolution: Life is inviolable from the moment of conception until age thirteen. Between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, however, parents can have their child “unwound,” whereby all of the child’s organs are transplanted into different donors, so life doesn’t technically end. Connor is too difficult for his parents to control. Risa, a ward of the state, is not enough to be kept alive. And Lev is a tithe, a child conceived and raised to be unwound. Together, they may have a chance to escape and to survive.
UnWholly
Thanks to Connor, Lev, and Risa—and their high-profile revolt at Happy Jack Harvest Camp—people can no longer turn a blind eye to unwinding. Ridding society of troublesome teens while simltaneously providing much-needed tissues for transplant might be convenient, but its morality has finally been brought into question. However, unwinding has become big business, and there are powerful political and corporate interests that want to see it not only continue, but also expand to the unwinding of prisoners and the impoverished.
Cam is a product of unwinding; made entirely out of the parts of other unwinds, he is a teen who does not technically exist. A futuristic Frankenstein, Cam struggles with a search for identity and meaning and wonders if a rewound being can have a soul. And when the actions of a sadistic bounty hunter cause Cam’s fate to become inextricably bound with the fates of Connor, Risa, and Lev, he’ll have to question humanity itself.
UnSouled
Connor and Lev are on the run after the destruction of the Graveyard, the last safe haven for AWOL Unwinds. But for the first time, they’re not just running away from something. This time, they’re running toward answers, in the form of a woman Proactive Citizenry has tried to erase from history itself. This was one that gave me the actual body shudders. The world was so twisted and gave me that eerie possibility in another dimension type feeling. Like it is just another Swift’s Modest Proposal suggestion away.

The Knife of Never Letting Go

Chaos Walking
This is one of those I devoured. The first one, I couldn’t sleep until I was done. I hunted down the rest of the trilogy and it stuck the landing. The Noise was such a cool factor and I loved the characters and how they made it in their rough world. Love you, Manchee.

Battle Royale
A class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill one another until only one survivor is left standing. The Film
A 2000 Japanese action thriller film directed by Kinji Fukasaku, and written by his son Kenta Fukasaku, based on the controversial 1999 novel by Koushun Takami. Starring Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, Tarō Yamamoto, and Takeshi Kitano, the film follows a group of junior-high-school students forced to fight to the death by the Japanese totalitarian government. The film drew controversy and was banned or excluded from distribution in several countries; Toei Company refused to sell the film to any United States distributor for over a decade due to concerns about potential controversy and lawsuits, until Anchor Bay Films eventually acquired the film in 2010 for a direct-to-video release.

I feel like this is a cheat. It’s one novel but it is technically a manga series so… It’s also a series that blew me away. I read the whole series in one night because I could not stop. The novelization was just as good. The brutal reality these kids not only have to go through but that some embrace was jarring and horrifying. Diving into these students lives and psyches is a wild ride. The movie, abridged as films usually have to be, was still a good representation of the madness. It’s hard to recommend because it is incredibly brutal but if this is your bag you have to read this one.
